Throughout my life, I was always the kid who could go into a test without preparing for it and do pretty well. I was used to getting straight A's without having to study that much if at all. This was most common in math more than any other subject. This all changes when I came to the High School. Freshman year, I found myself falling behind and getting grades such as A-'s and B+'s. I was not used to getting these grades so it was hard to deal with it. I asked myself questions such as, "Is the curriculum really that much harder in High School? Am I falling behind because I now have six classes to keep track of?" Even though some of the questions were partly true, they were not the main reason I was struggling. I was struggling because I was not studying, or if I did, I was not studying enough, or even the right way. That is when I started to do some research and ask my peers and teachers what the best ways to study were. I got some help here and there, but the internet is where I found the most helpful and useful information that I still use today as a Junior.
One of the biggest distractions that I had while studying was my phone. It would constantly ring or buzz with notifications and I would always reply to them or end up getting distracted by a game or social media. Now, I put my phone downstairs when I am studying up in my room and it has really helped to makes my studying better and more effecient. I have also found that doing things like rewriting notes, and using memorization games such as flashcards and Quizlet, can really help retain information. Taking breaks and setting up rewards is a great way to help maintain studying and good study habits. | Image from: |
